How did you decide on the HR field?
When I started my career (for the second time), I thought I could solve many of the social problems facing American citizens. The best way to do that was to join the Non-Profit world. I took a position working for a non-profit that provided a home for children in DSS custody. Our CEO came to me one day and said that he was going to fill two vacant positions, Director of Finance and Director of Human Resources. He asked which I would like to become. I couldn’t decide on the spot so he agreed to let me try each and figure out which I liked best. So for the next 4 years, I wore both hats. However, I learned that I did like working with people more than working with numbers. After that, I made a decision to only focus on Human Resources.

Why do you choose to be active in the SHRM/GSHRM organization?
I enjoy being in SHRM/GSHRM for the networking abilities and learning potential. It is great to be around people who do what you do and have different insights and perspectives on how to get the job done. Also, the classes offered and continuing education help me daily.

What do you enjoying doing outside of work?
When I’m not working, I enjoy spending as much time as I can with my family. My husband and 18 year old daughter take my complete focus. We have a pontoon and love to spend our weekends on the lake.

Are you involved in other volunteer organizations? If so, in what areas?
Due to my past involvement with Non-profit organizations, they are still dear to my heart. I volunteer at Cherokee County History & Arts Museum. Yes, there is a Museum in Cherokee County and if you haven’t visited, you should. Also, my mother-in-law started the Carpenter’s Table in Moore, SC where she provides food, toiletries, and other items to those in need. About 150 people come through the doors weekly seeking help. This is a great organization to be involved in and it impacts the lives of so many who would not have assistance otherwise.
