Where is your hometown?  I was born in Andrews, NC. However, my parents moved to the Greenville, SC area when I was 3 months old.  I consider Greenville my hometown. I attended Clemson University for both my Bachelors and Master’s degree.

What does true leadership mean to you?

  • Passion - If you have passion in what you do then you love what you do day in and day out.
  • Integrity, trust and credibility - If you do not have this, then no one will see you as a leader.
  • Honesty and Transparency - If you or someone is unsure of something or can’t readily provide an answer or solution, I have found it is best to state this in the beginning. Once steps have been taken to get an answer or resolution, it’s always a good practice to circle back and follow up with the appropriate party/parties that may be waiting.

In short, Leadership to me is defined by helping others become the best person they can be within their job specific parameters in order to help them succeed in the best way they can.

If you were to tell one person “thank you” for helping you become the person you are today, who would it be and why? This is a very hard question because I cannot name just one person. First and foremost, I would have to say thank you to my parents for the person I am today. I saw how hard they worked to succeed and serve as great role models to me. They taught me that you have to work to become who you want to be because nothing is ever just given to you. They taught me that if I ever got discouraged to take one step at a time in order to accomplish the goal rather than trying to complete it all at once. They taught me to have love and respect for others. They taught me that we all make mistakes and that we have to learn from those mistakes in an effort to be successful.

Secondly, I have to name Mrs. Cam Underhill.  She was my first Manager after I graduated Clemson with my Master’s degree. I had honor and privilege to have an internship at Palmetto Health in Easley and after I graduated I became the Administrative Assistant in the Education Department.  Cam encouraged me to use my degree even though I was not in HR.  I became a DDI Instructor while I was there and within a year became a Recruiter in HR.  Although Cam was not in HR, she still offered had an influence and offered me encouragement because HR and the Education Department worked closely together. I still think of her to this day and I often wish I had the chance to tell her thank you. Unfortunately, about a year after leaving Palmetto Health to further my career I found out that she had passed away. She was a very vibrant and brilliant lady that not only encouraged people she met. But, she also liked to see the people she met succeed.

Why do you choose to be active in the SHRM/GSHRM organization?  I choose to be active in the SHRM/GSHRM organization to learn, understand, experience and for staying abreast of the ever changing rules and regulations, changes in technology and to keep current on social and professional networking sites.  In today’s world, there is always something new each day to keep up with.  Also, by attending seminars, meetings and networking events, I have the opportunity to meet others in my profession that often times know firsthand the challenges and pains we face in Human Resources.
